Q1: How do I change my Custom-Tech password?
Q2: What are Security Alerts or Site Certificates, and what should I do with them?
Q3: Why are these Maildir and public_html folders in my home directory?

Q1: How do I check my Custom-Tech email?
  • The easiest way to check your email is via our Web Mail service. Simply click on "Web Services" under the Existing Customers heading to your left.

  • If you choose not to use Web Mail, you will need to add an account to your email client (Outlook Express, Mozilla Mail, etc) and configure it to fetch your mail from our servers.

When configuring your email client, use IMAP (not POP) as the server type and mail.custom-tech.net as the server name. You will also need to provide your Custom-Tech user name and password.
Q2: How do I send email?
  • Like checking your email, the easiest way to send email is via our Web Mail service. Click on "Web Services" under the Existing Customers heading to your left.

  • If you choose not to use Web Mail, sending mail depends on your email client and Internet Service Provider (ISP).

For clients such as Outlook Express and Mozilla Mail, you'll have to set the Outgoing/SMTP Server name to the one provided by your ISP.
Q3: How do I forward my Custom-Tech email to another address?
  • Click on "Web Services" under the Existing Customers heading to your left. After you log in, click on the Forwards icon at the bottom of the Web Services window. Follow the on-screen guide to forward your email to another address.
Q4: What can I do about spam mail in my Custom-Tech mailbox?
  • Custom-Tech automatically scans all incoming email with SpamAssassin to minimize the amount of spam delivered to your mailbox. Messages marked as spam are stored in your Junk mail folder. After one week, messages in this folder are automatically deleted.

  • Due to the subjective nature of spam, Custom-Tech uses a medium threshold to determine whether a message is junk or not. If you find that you are still receiving spam in your inbox, you may request to have your threshold lowered. Likewise, if non-spam emails are being filed in your Junk folder, you may request to have your threshold raised. Both of these requests can be made by emailing the Postmaster.

Q1: How do I change my Custom-Tech password?
  • Click on "Web Services" under the Existing Customers heading to your left. After you log in, click on the Password icon at the bottom of the Web Services window. Follow the on-screen guide to change your password.
Q2: What are Security Alerts or Site Certificates, and what should I do with them?
  • Security Alerts or Site Certificates are your browser's way of telling you that you are about to enter an encrypted area.

  • To protect you from eavesdroppers, Custom-Tech uses encryption when transferring sensitive data (such as your username and password).

  • To utilize encryption, Custom-Tech offers your browser a Digital Certificate, much like a real world Certificate of Authenticity. If prompted by your browser, you should accept the certificates offered by Custom-Tech in order to take advantage of our high encryption areas.

  • Some browsers will prompt for your approval each and every time you enter an encrypted area of our site. For your convenience, we recommend you tell your browser to permanently remember our certificates (IE 6.x details; Mozilla 1.4 details).
Q3: Why are these Maildir and public_html folders in my home directory?
  • When your account is created, we automatically create these two folders in your home directory.

  • The Maildir folder, as the name suggests, stores all of your email. The contents of this folder will automatically be updated as you send and receive email.

  • The public_html folder contains those files that will be seen by anyone who visits your web page. We provide you with a temporary web page informing viewers that your site is currently under construction. When you're ready to roll out your full-blown web site, simply replace this temporary page (index.html) with your own.
